Joint South Bronx Team Ministry Bilingual Service and Block Party
Sunday, September 11, 2022
On Sunday, September 11, following our Joint South Bronx Team Ministry service, we held a Community Block Party. Even though we had to cut the Party short because of the rain, we had a good time. The children enjoyed the Bounce House and Face painting and received book bags and school supplies. For the adults, there were community resources, including Covid testing, and free Covid Test kits, and of course there was music and plenty of refreshments. We thank all who supported the event and contributed to making the day of worship and fellowship the success that it was.

Team Ministry Joint Service
What a joyous beginning to our new ministry as St. David’s, St. Edmund’s, San Juan Bautista and St. Simeon’s gathered at St. David’s to worship with our new Priest-in-Charge, the Rev. Benjamin Nnaji on September 12. The Rev. Mario Martinez, from San Juan Bautista, joined Fr. Ben at the Altar. Those who couldn’t join us in-person were able to participate online. We also had the opportunity to thank God for the lives of family and friends who died since the beginning of the pandemic. We prayed for them and their loved ones as the names were read.
As always, we appreciate Council Member Vanessa Gibson for her continual support of our church and community and taking the time to greet us.
The Service was followed by a Community Block Party, including refreshments, bookbags for the children, pamphlets and flyers concerning health and other important information for the community.
We are grateful for the parishioners and community organizations that made the day the success that it was – a beautiful day of worship and fellowship.

A Wonderful Morning of Worship and Fellowship
Each year the men of St. David’s sponsor a Corporate Communion and Breakfast. Again, this year members of St. Simeon’s joined us in worship and fellowship. The guest speaker at the Breakfast was Detective Fred Washington, Neighborhood Coordinating Officer. His timely message informed us about some of the changes that have taken place in the last few years regarding the community, including opportunities available to youth in our area. He encouraged us to get in touch with him if we have questions or concerns about the community.

This year, St. David’s decided to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. But we soon realized we did not have to do it by ourselves – St. Simeon’s and San Juan Bautista asked if they could join in this endeavor. Those who couldn’t attend on Thanksgiving Day, contributed financially or by shopping for items and preparing dishes. So, it turned out to be a wonderful Team Ministry - Church without Walls - event. Our guests appreciated receiving the meals and the fellowship among the congregations and community was great,

St. David's and San Juan Bautista joined St. Simeon's for Mass on the Triangle. St. Simeon's will continue to hold these outdoor Services, Sundays at Noon, through Labor Day weekend. Then on Sunday, September 10, at 4:00 p.m., we will have a Festive Eucharist in Celebration of a New Ministry - the South Bronx Team Ministry, with the Rt. Rev. Allen K. Shin, Bishop Suffragan, presiding. The Service on September 10 will be multicultural and feature the combined choir which had its debut on August 13.
Please Note: There will not be a Service at St. David's on September 10.

Summer Worship and Fellowship
Each year, St. David's begins the summer with a Parish Picnic. This year we did something different; it was the South Bronx Team Ministry Picnic. Our Team Ministry was launched in March; the congregations in the Team are Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, St. Simeon's Church and St. David's Church. Fr. Bennett is the Canon Missioner and the Rev. Gladys Diaz is the Latina Missioner. The Picnic was an opportunity for the members of the three congregations to worship and fellowship together. It was a beautiful day and a good time was had by all. But this is just the beginning; we're looking forward to the new and exciting ventures that are coming soon.

South Bronx Churches Assembly with Police Commissioner
Members of St. David's joined those from other congregations on Sunday, April 30, for an Assembly with Police Commissioner James O'Neill. Topics included Public Safety, Gun Safety and Immigration. We also received updates on NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) and upcoming affordable housing. Before we heard remarks from the Police Commissioner, he was asked a few questions. Although he could not commit to everything that was asked of him, the Assembly was encouraged by his willingness continue to work with us.
The Assembly held at Immaculate Conception RC Church was very well attended.
St. David's has been a member of South Bronx Churches (SBC) since it began in 1987. SBC was founded by congregations of different faith traditions to provide a power base for the South Bronx to affect social change. SBC is part of Metro Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF)

Church and Community
Each year St. David's Men's Club sponsors a Communion Breakfast. This year's event was held on April 2. Because of the early time of the Service, our brothers and sisters from other churches were able to join us in worship and fellowship before going on to their respective churches.
At the Breakfast following the Service, we heard from Mr. John Dudley, District Manager of Bronx Community Board 3. In his timely and informative message, he described the work of the Community Board, the changes that have been made in the Bronx over the years and the challenges ahead. He also mentioned how we could be a part of this work and continue to make a difference in our community.

Love Shouldn't Hurt
That was the title of a workshop on Domestic Violence and how to end the cycle, presented by the Office of the Bronx District Attorney and sponsored by the South Bronx Interparish Council (the ten Episcopal congregations in the South Bronx). The workshop was held at St. Margaret's Church, Longwood, on Sunday afternoon, February 26. Before the Workshop began, the Bronx District Attorney, Darcel D. Clark, welcomed us and spoke about the changes that her office has made in the area of Domestic Violence. Members of the churches and the community heard timely, informative presentations from a panel that dealt with different issues as they relate to Domestic Violence -- legal, employment, police, social work. It was an afternoon very well spent.

Thanksgiving Day
We are thankful that we have members and friends who gave their time, talent and treasure - shopping, preparing and serving - to make Thanksgiving Day at Melrose Villa Hermosa (a Seniors residence on 160th Street and Melrose Avenue) the wonderful day that it was. The residents appreciated this gesture and we are glad that we were able once again to have this opportunity to share our gifts.

Annual Community Block Party was Wonderful!
St. David's begins the summer with a Picnic and ends with a Block Party, one of our major outreach events. It's a time for members of the church and community to get together and enjoy the day. As always, we appreciate the donations of school supplies which the parishioners provided. Again this year Assemblymember Michael Blake donated backpacks for the children. The Hon. John D. Tucker, Jr., NYS District Leader, 79th A.D., addressed the gathering and distributed the backpacks. An added feature this year was the presence of the FDNY Mobile CPR Unit which gave invaluable training to both children and adults.

Bishop's Visitation - A Special Day in the Life of a Parish
The Rt. Rev. Allen K. Shin, Bishop Suffragan, Presided
We are so fortunate that Bishop Shin was able to rearrange his schedule so that he could visit us on May 29 (the Visitation was originally scheduled for January 24, but was cancelled due to the snowstorm). We heard a timely, informative and inspiring Sermon. The Bishop's inspirational message was continued following the Service when he joined us in fellowship and invited the congregation to express any concerns they had or just introduce themselves so he could get to know some of the members. It was truly a blessed day.

This year in Celebration of Women's Day and Mother's Day, parishioners brought in photos of their mothers and other special women in their lives for a display. Just looking at the photos brought back so many pleasant memories. And since it's not just one day that we remember these women, the display will be kept up and added to throughout the year.

Health Program Initiative
St. David's is one of ten churches in the South Bronx Interparish Council (IPC). A little over a year ago, the IPC embarked on a Health Program Initiative, focusing on a different topic each month, thereby bringing awareness of the topic to the people of our church and community. March is Racism and Socio-Economic Justice Awareness Month.
Also, each month one of our churches hosts a Chat & Chew. St. David's hosted the March Chat & Chew on March 6; Ms. Carla Burns, Diocesan Anti-Racism Committee, gave a timely, inspiring presentation.

Some Highlights of 2015
Thanksgiving Day
As been our custom for the past few years, we prepared Thanksgiving Day Dinner for residents of Melrose Villa Hermosa, a Seniors residence on 160th Street and Melrose Avenue. Members and friends of St. David's offered their time, talent and treasure to make this endeavor the success that it was. We are grateful for those who made donations, shopped, cooked and help with other preparations and serving. The residents were very appreciative and we are so glad to we had this opportunity to share God's many blessings.

Counting our Blessings
Sunday, November 22, was our Harvest-Home Celebration and Stewardship Commitment Sunday. As part of the festivities, each year the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) prepare gift baskets for the sick and shut-ins. And on Thanksgiving Day, members will continue to offer their time, talent and treasure as they prepare Dinner for the residents of Melrose Villa Hermosa, a Seniors residence in our community. We are grateful to have these opportunities to give thanks to God and to share all that God has given us.

AN INSPIRATIONAL EVENING WAS HAD BY ALL
St. David's is one of ten churches in the South Bronx Interparish Council (IPC). For the past ten years, one of the IPC's Bonds of Affection has been the Bishop Paul Moore, Jr. Faith and Society Lecture. This year, on September 17, we were honored to have as the speaker, the Rt. Rev. Allen K. Shin, Suffragan Bishop. The Lecture was held at St. Margaret's Church. The Vicar, the Rev. Theodora Brooks, is also the Chair of our IPC. It was a great evening, and we were so pleased to hear Bishop Shin's moving address and have him join us in fellowship. |

Health Program Initiative
St. David's is one of ten churches in the South Bronx Interparish Council (IPC). This fall the IPC is embarking on a Health Program Initiative, which will focus on a different topic each month, thereby bringing awareness of the topic to the people of our church and community. October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and each congregation in our IPC gave out vital information on this subject and included a special Collect (Prayer) for the Month. In addition, Pink Ribbons, an international symbol of breast cancer awareness and support, were distributed.
Also, each month one of our churches will host a Chat & Chew. Members from our ten churches gathered at Grace Church, West Farms for our first Chat & Chew and received very important information about Breast Cancer from physicians at Montefiore Hospital who specialize in this field, and we had an opportunity to ask questions on the subject. It was an informative, well spent afternoon.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month; our Chat & Chew was held on Sunday, November 9 at St. Margaret's Church, Longwood. We heard essential information from experts in the field of Diabetes and Nutrition, and again had a chance to join in a discussion on this important issue. On Sunday, December 7, we met again at St. Margaret's to observe Fiscal Health Awareness and Anti-Poverty Awareness Month.

Bronx Fellowship
St. David's is one of twenty-four Bronx Episcopal parishes represented in the Bronx Council (Officers of our three Bronx Interparish Councils). Over the years, the Council has sponsored Bronx-wide Services during Holy Week and a Service on Martin Luther King Day. This year it was decided to add a Picnic to our events. Considering that many were away or had scheduling conflicts this time of year, we were pleased that we had representation from more than half of our parishes and that Bishop and Mrs. Dietsche attended the festivities which were held on the grounds of St. James' Church (Fordham). Everyone had a great time -- there was plenty of food, games and good weather -- a chance to meet new friends and renew old acquaintances

In 2013, Metro IAF organized the three biggest mayoral candidates forums of the year. On March 30, a citywide assembly was held to advance Metro IAF's agenda to improve housing, education, safety and several other issues. At the Assembly, the Mayor agreed to deliver on the promises he and his commissioners made to New Yorkers. Held at the Brooklyn Marriott, the Assembly was very well attended. Members of the various affiliates of Metro IAF spoke about the work that has been done and still needs to be done in such areas as municipal IDs, parks, education, housing and gun control.

St. David's Welcomes Members of the Episcopal Urban Caucus
This year's Episcopal Urban Caucus Assembly (EUC) was hosted by the Diocese of New York. Among their site visits to urban programs was one to the South Bronx on February 20. Following the tour and before they headed down to the Cathedral for the Assembly Eucharist, they and members from the South Bronx Interparish Council (IPC) came to St. David's for a reception and to see a movie on the ministry of the South Bronx IPC, which consists of the ten Episcopal congregations in the South Bronx. We were pleased to have this opportunity to host part of the EUC's program; it was a wonderful afternoon -- renewing old acquaintances, making new friends. The following day, the IPC received an award from the Episcopal Network for Economic Justice, to honor all the ministry of our ten congregations in the area of economic justice.
